Types of Learning Differences
Learning disorders are neurological conditions that affect an individual’s ability to acquire, process, or express information. They impact skills such as reading, writing, math, and attention, despite normal intelligence. Common examples include dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Early identification and tailored interventions can help manage these challenges.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia makes it difficult to read, write, and spell. It’s caused by differences in the parts of the brain that process language.
Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia makes it difficult to write clearly and correctly. It can affect a person’s ability to translate their thoughts into written words, or the physical act of writing itself.
Dyscalculia
Dyscalculia affects an individual’s ability to understand and work with numbers. People with dyscalculia often struggle with basic arithmetic, number sense, and mathematical concepts, which can impact daily activities such as managing finances, telling time, or measuring quantities.
Do you struggle with focus?
ADHD
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a brain condition that affects how people focus, control their energy, and manage their impulses. People with ADHD often have trouble with attention, staying organized, or sitting still. These challenges can make school, work, and relationships difficult. ADHD usually starts in childhood but can continue into adulthood. The good news is that with proper help, like therapy or medicine, people with ADHD can learn to manage their symptoms and lead successful lives.
Our Process
We offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you learn more about our services. During this no-obligation call, you can ask questions, discuss your concerns, and see how we can help you or your child. It’s a great way to understand our assessment process and decide if our approach suits you. To schedule your free consultation, just call our office or use the online booking form on this website.
A clinical interview is a key part of our assessment process. During this session, Dr. Marsh will talk with you to gather detailed information about the history, current concerns, and daily experiences of you or your child. We’ll discuss topics like behavior, emotions, relationships, and any challenges you face. This conversation helps us understand your unique situation and guides our assessment plan. The interview usually takes about an hour and is done remotely for your convenience. It’s an important step in creating a personalized evaluation tailored to your needs.
Our assessment is conducted over two remote sessions for your convenience. We’ll administer various tests and questionnaires to evaluate cognitive abilities, attention, and other relevant skills. Each session typically lasts about 2-3 hours, with breaks as needed. We use secure video conferencing and online testing platforms to ensure a comprehensive evaluation from the comfort of your home. This two-part approach allows us to gather thorough information while maintaining flexibility for your schedule. You will also receive links to surveys about you or your child that you will complete online at your convenience.
The feedback session is the final step in our assessment process. During this remote meeting, lasting about an hour, we’ll review the results of your assessment together. We’ll explain our findings, discuss any diagnoses if applicable, and answer your questions. Most importantly, we’ll provide practical recommendations tailored to your specific needs, whether for home, school, or work. You’ll receive a comprehensive written report detailing the assessment results and our suggestions. This session is designed to give you a clear understanding of the assessment outcomes and equip you with strategies for moving forward.
Inclusive Pricing, No Surprises
At Empathic Assessment, we want you to be fully informed about all costs for your psychoeducational assessment. That’s why we offer a flat-rate price for your assessment.
Additional services outside of the assessment are charged hourly (for example, court appearances, or attending school meetings). All hourly fees are detailed in our intake process. You are also welcome to contact us with any pricing questions.
While we don’t directly accept insurance, we understand the importance of making our services accessible. After your assessment, we provide a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
A superbill is an itemized form that includes all the information insurance companies require, such as:
- Diagnostic codes
- Service codes
- Provider information
- Dates of service
Many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits that may cover a portion of our services. By providing you with a superbill, we empower you to seek reimbursement directly from your insurance provider, potentially reducing your out-of-pocket expenses.
We recommend contacting your insurance company to inquire about their out-of-network benefits for psychological and educational testing services. This can help you understand your coverage and potential reimbursement before scheduling your assessment.
Our team is happy to answer any questions about this process and assist you in making our services as affordable as possible.

What is a psychoeducational evaluation?
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment process that helps to understand a person’s cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioral strengths and challenges. It typically includes standardized tests, observations, and interviews to provide a complete picture of an individual’s learning and psychological profile.
How long does the evaluation process take?
The evaluation process varies based on individual needs but generally includes an initial consultation, one or more testing sessions, and a feedback session. Most evaluations are completed within 2-3 weeks from the initial consultation.
Who can benefit from a psychoeducational evaluation?
The evaluation typically involves standardized tests, which assess various skills such as memory, processing speed, language, and problem-solving. Sessions are conducted in a supportive and confidential environment to ensure you or your child feel comfortable.
What information should I have ready for the assessment?
Depending on your specific needs, we will ask for copies of grade reports, standardized testing results, IEP/ 504 Plans, and any prior assessments you have undergone. These documents can be uploaded to your account in the secure client portal.
Are the results confidential?
Yes, your privacy is a top priority. All information gathered during the evaluation process is confidential and protected under applicable privacy laws. We do not share information without your consent unless required by law.
How do I prepare for my first appointment?
Once your appointment is scheduled, we’ll provide detailed instructions on any necessary preparations. Generally, we encourage clients to get a good night’s sleep before testing and to submit any relevant medical or educational records to the HIPPA-compliant client portal.
Will my insurance cover the cost of the evaluation?
We are a private practice and do not bill insurance directly. However, we can provide an itemized receipt that you may submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand what psychological assessment services they may cover.
What will the final report include?
The final report will include a comprehensive overview of the assessment findings, including strengths and challenges identified, diagnostic impressions, and specific recommendations tailored to support academic, work, or personal success.
